Bringing a new cat into a home that already has cats can be an exciting yet challenging experience. To ensure a smooth transition for your newest family member, it’s crucial to introduce them properly. At Into Loving Homes, we recommend setting up a ‘landing room’—a designated space like a bathroom, laundry room, or bedroom—where your new cat can acclimate to the new environment safely.

The Importance of a Landing Room

The landing room serves as a controlled environment where your cat can gradually get used to the new sounds, smells, and routines of your home. This space helps reduce stress by preventing the overwhelming experience of a large, unfamiliar area. Depending on your cat’s personality, they may need just a few days in this room, while others might require up to three weeks to feel safe and comfortable.

Setting Up the Landing Room

In the landing room, place the kitty litter on one side and the food, water, bed, and a hiding spot on the other. This arrangement ensures your cat feels secure and maintains hygiene. Avoid placing the food and bedding next to the litter box, as cats prefer a clean environment for eating and sleeping.

Although we recommend a landing room for all new cats, this approach is particularly important if you have other pets or small children. The landing room allows your new cat to adjust to the presence of other animals and people at their own pace (and vice versa), with the comfort and security of a barrier between them.

Patience is Key

Love, patience, and following these guidelines will help you determine the right time to introduce your new cat to the rest of the household.

By taking these steps, you’ll create a smooth and stress-free transition for your new cat as they settle into their forever home.
