In Australia, bushfires are an ever-present risk, and being prepared can save lives—including your pets’. Planning ahead is essential to ensure their safety. Here are some vital bushfire evacuation tips to help keep your furry friends protected—it could make all the difference.

Now/Before Fire Season:
Update Microchip Details: Ensure your pet’s microchip information is current, including an alternate contact number outside your area.
Secure Transport Gear: Invest in sturdy carry cages for cats and small animals, secure collars with ID tags (including your name, your pet’s name, and your vet’s contact details), and strong leads for each dog.
Transport Plan: Develop a clear plan for safely capturing and moving your pets to a vehicle, assigning roles to family members as needed.
Emergency Boarding Options: Speak with your veterinarian, local shelters, and boarding facilities to understand their capacity to house pets during emergencies.
Crate Training: Acclimate your pets to being confined in a carry cage or crate to reduce stress during transport.
Digital Backup: Save electronic copies of microchip details, vet records, and photos of your pets.
At the Start of Fire Season: Prepare an emergency kit that includes: – A carry cage or crate large enough for your pet to stand or sit comfortably, labeled with your name, pet’s name, and contact details. – Collars with ID tags and sturdy leashes for dogs. – Food and water for at least three days, including a can opener for canned food. – Food and water bowls, cat litter, a litter box, paper towels, and plastic bags for waste. – Treats, a favourite toy, and a pet first aid kit. – A waterproof bag with copies of medical and vaccination records, medications, registration/microchip certificates, and a photo of your pet.

During Days of Extreme Fire Warnings:
Keep Pets Close: Keep pets inside so they can be quickly retrieved.
Limit Hiding Spots: Block access to areas where pets may hide and become hard to reach.
Pre-Evacuate Small Pets: Confine cats and small dogs to carry cages ahead of time, as frightened animals may hide during emergencies.
Secure Dogs: Ensure dogs have secure collars and leads readily available. Pets may act unpredictably due to smoke and noise, so be prepared.
Report Lost Pets: If separated, immediately notify local vets, shelters, rescue groups, and nearby facilities to help locate your pet. Preparation can save lives—don’t wait until it’s too late. Keep your pets safe and ensure they have the best chance of staying with their loving families through any emergency.
