When it comes to your non human family members, we understand the deep bond and love you share. At Into Loving Homes, we’re committed to ensuring that you and your animals can stay together whenever possible. We’re well aware that not everyone who rehomes animals does so happily, and we’re here to offer guidance and assistance either way.
In this blog, we’ve compiled a treasure trove of tips and resources based on the most common questions and concerns we’ve received. Our aim is to empower you to make the best decision for your beloved family members regardless of their species.
Seeking Short or Long-term Foster Care for Your Animal: Life can throw unexpected curveballs, from hospital stays to sudden changes in your situation. In these trying times, it’s essential to explore options that will ensure your animal’s well-being:
1. Lean on Friends and Family First: Your animals comfort is paramount, and often, the best temporary home is with those who already know and love them. Reach out to friends and family within your immediate circle – they may be more than willing to provide a temporary home while you get back on your feet.
2. Contact the Source: Get in touch with the rescue group, breeder, or individual from whom you initially welcomed your pet into your life through. While rescue groups typically focus on fostering homeless pets facing immediate risks (ie from pounds or off the streets), it’s still worth reaching out to explore any potential assistance they may provide (they may have a ‘get back on your feet program’).
3. Connect with Crisis Support Groups: In times of need, there are organisations ready to provide assistance and valuable advice. Here are some useful links to consider (sorry we don’t have them for all of Australia, they just aren’t available):
- Animal Aid (VIC)
- RSPCA Safe Beds for Pets program (NSW)
- RSPCA Pets in Crisis program (QLD)
- Safe Pets Safe Families (SA)
4. Explore Your Local Rescue Groups: Reach out to these organisations to inquire about their capacity to help. Be patient with them, you may be requiring a service that they simply cannot offer (due to funding, resources, companies mission, insurance, location, etc..).
5. Local Pet Boarding or Pet Sitters: Another avenue to consider is online resources for local pet boarding accommodations and private pet sitters. The digital landscape now offers a growing list of platforms that connect pet owners with trustworthy sitters, often at a reasonable cost. These sitters can either care for your pet in their home or within the comfort of your own home at a cost.
At Into Loving Homes, we recognise that your animal is not just an pet; they’re a cherished member of your family. Their happiness and well-being matter to us, and we’re here to support you through these challenging times. Together, we can work towards keeping your furry friend by your side, and when it is not possible or not in the best interest of all involved we will happily assist in the rehoming.
