In the world of online animal rehoming, a captivating photo can be the key to a animals new home. At Into Loving Homes, we understand that the power of an engaging photo is immeasurable. It’s their visual introduction to potential adopters, a snapshot that speaks volumes, and an opportunity to showcase their unique personalities- the personality that will induce love at first sight. To ensure your beloved animal stands out, giving them the best opportunity of a loving home, fast, it’s worth investing time and effort into taking the perfect photo selection.
The Photographer’s Touch:
One of the best ways to secure great photos is to seek the assistance of a professional or enthusiastic amateur photographer. You’d be surprised how many talented photographers are willing to lend their skills to help rescue pets. Reach out to your community and social networks; you’ll likely find many happy-snappers eager to contribute their expertise to this noble cause.
However, if you’re opting for the DIY approach, follow our easy step-by-step guide to capturing images that truly pop.
Four Hands Are Better Than Two:
Having extra hands and eyes on deck can make a significant difference in getting your pet to shine in front of the camera. Enlist an assistant to help handle and coax your pet into striking the perfect pose while you focus on snapping the shot.
For cats, consider having your assistant sit draped in fabric, cradling the cat gently in their lap. With dogs, your assistant can hold the leash, offer treats, make soothing noises, or engage in a game of fetch, especially in a fenced area.
Take It Outside:
The natural light of the great outdoors can work wonders for your pet’s photo. Dogs behind bars or in a cage can convey the wrong message, potentially giving off the impression of aggression or mistrust. Moreover, it can obscure happy expressions and diminish the luster of their coats.
Utilize lawns and greenery as your background to achieve balanced lighting in all conditions. If that’s not an option, a plain wall, blanket, or an outdoor bed can serve as alternatives. Steer clear of cluttered, messy, or dirty backgrounds that could distract from your pet’s charm.
Beware of Zombi Eyes:
In flash photography, pets’ eyes can often appear red or green, similar to red-eye in humans. This effect occurs when light reflects off the back of their dilated pupils. To avoid these eerie “zombie eyes,” opt for outdoor shots in natural light to let your pet’s true spirit shine through.
Lighting Is Everything:
When photographing black or dark-colored pets, select a well-lit area with a contrasting background color. Grass is particularly effective at balancing light, while sand or light foregrounds can create highlights in their eyes and smiles.
Props with Personality:
To create a special connection through your photos, ensure your pet is facing the camera, with their full attention on you. Using food treats, toys, or objects that make interesting noises can engage almost any animal. For a simple homemade prop, fill a paper bag with rice or dried beans and give it a little shake to capture their focus.
Colorful props can also catch the eye; a bright collar or bandana can work wonders. You may also consider including a favorite toy or a comfy bed in the picture, but remember to keep it simple and uncluttered.
If your animal possesses a unique personality trait, turn it into a theme for your photos. For instance, some dogs adore playing with balls or chasing bubbles, while others have a cherished teddy bear.
Get on Their Level:
Crouching or lying down on your front to capture images at your pet’s eye level creates a much more engaging photo compared to one taken from above. Experiment with creative angles, like looking up at your pet as you snap their portrait.
Show Off That Smile:
Dogs, in particular, have highly expressive faces. Capturing their “happy face” with an open mouth and smiling eyes instantly makes them more appealing for adoption. Engage them in a little play and run-around before taking their portrait to bring out their best expressions.
Patience Is a Virtue:
Rushing a photo can quickly lead to disappointment. Allow a generous amount of time for each subject, at least 30 minutes and up to an hour if you’re in a studio or an unfamiliar environment. This gives your pet time to feel comfortable and relaxed, resulting in natural and happy expressions.
