One of the most common assumptions in animal adoption is that animals needing new homes must be special needs — that something is wrong with them, or that they require extraordinary care.

This simply isn’t true.

At Into Loving Homes, no animal currently available for adoption has special needs.

Where the Assumption Comes From

This misconception came up recently during a conversation with a new volunteer preparing to train with our administration team. She shared that she had assumed most animals rehomed through services would be special needs.

That belief came directly from her own adoption experience.

Years ago, she adopted a dog she later discovered had severe anxiety and reactivity — information that was not disclosed to her prior to adoption. As a result of the dog’s behaviour, she has sustained injuries including broken bones. She shared understandably that had she known the extent of her dog’s mental health challenges, she would never have gone ahead with the adoption.

When Information Is Withheld, Lives Change

Since that adoption, her life has had to completely adapt around the dog. For many people in this position, what follows is either surrendering the pet — or embarking on years of extensive behaviour training that costs thousands of dollars, the use of management tools, and medication trials.

In cases like this, there is no recovery — only management.

As many people discover, around half of medication trials are unsuccessful in meaningfully calming highly anxious dogs. The result is often a life that revolves around managing stress, risk, and limitation. Most people would not choose this path if they truly understood what they were signing up for. And they shouldn’t be tricked into it.

Adoption Should Add Value to Your Life

Adoption is a commitment — but it should be a positive one.

Adoption should add value to your life:

  • Companionship
  • Connection
  • Joy
  • Calm

What you sign up for is what you should receive.

What Makes Into Loving Homes Different

At Into Loving Homes, transparency is non-negotiable.

Every animal’s history is fully intact and honestly shared. Adopters meet the rehoming family during a comprehensive handover and see the dog in their home environment.

Dogs listed as friendly with cats, dogs, or children are able to demonstrate this during the handover. Adopters can also observe the dog when left alone, to ensure they remain relaxed and do not show signs of separation anxiety.

There are no surprises.

A Kinder, Clearer Way to Adopt

No-surprise adoption is what people have been waiting for. It’s here.

Transparency protects both animals and people — and ensures longer-lasting, better-matched adoptions.
