Introducing a new cat to your property is an exciting experience, it’s essential to do it right to ensure a smooth transition for you and for your new friend. At Into Loving Homes, we recommend setting up a ‘landing space’ for your new cat. Don’t just put them out to roam free immediately onto your land, as they’re more than likely to take off. This designated space can be a dog crate in the barn, the bathroom, or another enclosed area, providing a safe and controlled environment for your cat to acclimate to the new sounds, smells, and routines without the overwhelming experience of a large, unfamiliar space.

The landing space helps your cat feel secure and reduces stress. Some cats might need just a few days in this space, while others might require up to three weeks to decompress and realise that you are the best thing for them, that they should stick around. It all depends on their individual personalities and how they show interest in exploring the rest of the property and their comfort with you.

In the landing space, set up clean kitty litter on one side, and food, water, a bed, and a hiding spot on the other. This arrangement ensures your cat feels comfortable and maintains hygiene, preventing them from toileting all over your barn. Avoid placing food and bedding next to the kitty litter to keep the area pleasant.

By following these guidelines, you help ensure a smooth and stress-free transition for your new cat into their forever environment. Thank you for adopting!
