The animal shelter was first brought to reality over 150 years ago.
On April 14, 1869, Caroline Earle White and a group of activists established what’s considered to be the first animal shelter. Its mission “to provide as soon as possible, a Refuge for lost and homeless dogs, where they could be kept until homes could be found for them, or they be otherwise disposed of.”
It was created for lost and homeless dogs. Not for animals with homes needing new homes. Those animals should be rehomed from where they live – Home to Home adoption.
Running any business the same as it was done 150 years ago would likely be doomed to fail. The way rehoming is being done today is failing animals. It is also failing donors and the environment.
